May Week 1
Summer golf season starts with a bang
The golfing season really kicked into gear with a bumper weekend of golf at The Links Golf Club, starting last Thursday with our annual fixture against the Three Club Farmers Golf Society. The Links was one of the founding “Three” clubs and this fixture dates back over 60 years.

The two teams were greeted by probably the best weather of the year so far as they teed off and course marshal Dave Jones was kept busy taking supplies of cold drinking water round the 4 games. In the end the home club emerged victorious by 3 games to 1.

On Friday it was our annual Invitation Day, where members invite guests from outside the club to partner them in a fourball betterball competition. Again the weather held fair although the heat was moderated by a cooling breeze which was stiff enough to challenge the players. The winning pair were Ricky Manson and his brother Doug (pictured with Men's Captain James Greenall), with 45 points, hotly pursued by Lawrence Hastie and Neil Farlie on 44. Ricky added nearest the pin on the 12th to his prize tally and David Thompson won the equivalent prize on the 9th.

Saturday saw our Mixed Greensome team playing away to Stowmarket in the Brtish Clubs Mixed Championships where home advantage definitely got the better of the majority of our players with the first three pairs losing by small margins. The wins achieved by the last two pairs were therefore hollow victories but some consolation nonetheless.

On Sunday we hosted Ryston Park in another Mixed Greensomes match, a regular fixture on our calendar, when our very strong team saw off the visitors with a 5-1 victory.

Bank Holiday Monday featured our Mixed Foursomes competition for the Newport Trophies with David and Marian Earle being narrowly beaten by Lawrence Hastie and Christine Ratcliff in a countback on the last 6 holes, both pairs finishing on 37 points, an excellent score in the breezy conditions.

To cap the weekend’s golfing festivities we held the Annual Midweek Charity Competition on Tuesday. With a slight change to the format this year we played a Waltz (1 score to count, 2 scores to count etc) with the added complication of a choice of easy or difficult (Pin of Death) pin positions on the par 3s. The runners up were Sarah Reardon, Di Parr and Pauline Bond who were pipped by some excellent scoring from the Men’s Captain, James Greenall, accompanied by John Yuill and Ian Clark with 57 points.
