First up, a difficult away fixture at Lanhydrock GC on Monday 19th May. In benign conditions the team struggled to make an impact against strong opposition. Slow greens and tree lined fairways were a factor in most group results, and despite some great golf, the visitors eventually succumbed to an overall 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 defeat.
Notable contributions were from the pairing of Vice Captain Tom Gair/Mark Jones (W2Up) and Jeff Deakin/Andy Hurrell (W3&2). Steve Blyth/Larry Whittaker also contributed a well fought half point. Congratulations to Kelvin Searle winning Nearest the Pin for WCGC.
This match was followed by a home fixture against Falmouth GC on Thursday 22nd May. On another warm and pleasant Spring day, the team were clearly pleased to be back on home turf and the excellent scores reflected this.
The hosts bagged 2 early points with wins from Dennis Fryer/Geoff Baylis (W2&1) and Jeff Deakin/David Felce (W6&5). Falmouth battled back in the next 2 groups to level the score at 2-2, but WC went on to take the final 4 matches, giving the hosts an overall 6-2 victory. Of these, the pairings of Gary Barber/Andy Hussey (W8&7) and Fred Grist/Nick Watters (W7&6) deserve special mention.
Congratulations to John Frewer who bagged the Nearest the Pin prize on top of a well earned win.
Up next, WCGC Seniors travel to St Austell GC on 4th June.
