The Parker Cup scratch team started their defense of the trophy last Monday with a tough draw against Stover, the team they beat in the final last year. After the 3 matches finished, the game was tied with 1 win for each team and the final match all square after 18 holes. However, it was 9.30 and darkness had enveloped Honiton Golf Club, so after discussions with Devon Golf it was agreed that the game should be decided by sudden death holes for the players who had halved their match. This took place on Monday night (19th), but unfortunately we lost on the second extra hole, so the team and their manager, Jason Wride, will have to regroup and focus on regaining the trophy next year.
However, the was much success to applaud last week starting with a resounding 10.5 – 3.5 victory in the home leg of the Picture Match over Sidmouth on Sunday, which we will try to build on in the second leg in October.
The men have entered two teams in the National Kyocera Matchplay event and both teams had good victories, with Team 1, managed by Rory Adams, beating Stover 3.5 – 1.5 on Tuesday, followed by team 2, managed by Neil Sear, beating Sidmouth 3 – 2 on their own patch the following day. Both of these results avenge defeats by these clubs in the past couple of seasons in this event. The draw for round 2 is out this week, so keep an eye on Club Teams if you want to put yourself in the mix for selection.
The Senior Mens team had a resounding win against Royal North Devon in the first round of the Emerton Court. Defending a 4.5 – 0.5 lead from the home leg, wins from Dennis Chivers / Chris Bird and Paul Maslen / Andy Pelosi was enough to seal the overall victory. Considering that in the corresponding fixture last year, we were roundly beaten in the away leg – the fact that every match reached the 17th was impressive in itself!
Finally, our Daily Mail Foursomes representatives, Stephen Morton & Alastair Mackenzie-Ross have now won three rounds, most recently an away win at Stover, and now have a visit to Lyme Regis in Round 4.
With the second rounds of the Palairet Trophy, Emerton Court and Exe Leagues coming up in early June, it is a busy time for the Men’s Teams, and the respective team managers will be selecting their teams from those who have indicated their availability in Club Teams in V1.
