The Help for Heroes season is now well under way, with Longcliffe proudly flying the flag in support of this fantastic league.
Two weeks ago, the team travelled to a well presented Birstall Golf Club. Despite some closely contested matches, we narrowly lost 4–2. However, we bounced back this week with a home fixture against Rothley, securing a hard-fought 3.5–2.5 victory. As always, the matches were played in a great spirit—competitive but friendly—while continuing to raise valuable funds for the league’s charities: Help for Heroes and Battle Back Golfers.
If you would like to represent Longcliffe in upcoming fixtures, please get in touch with Graham Robinson, H4H Team Captain.
Mens Combined v Burton (away)
In the first leg of the annual trophy fixture with Burton Upon Trent Golf Club the team visited Burton.
The weather whilst a challenge with heavy squally showers prominent most matches were completed despite this.
The course held up well with a few holes carrying standing water towards the end of the rounds, a great meal was enjoyed hosted by Burtons Vice Captain Gary Marler. The only victorious pairing on the day were Andy Moss and Mike Gubb winning 2&1, Halves for Mike Orchiston partnered by Gareth Nadin, and Adam Shepherd with Andy Smith.
Result after first leg is 4:2 to Burton who visit Longcliffe at the start of September.
County Mixed Foursomes
Our county mixed foursomes team of Andy Harding and Beth Johnson, Rich Wells and Joanne Barradell played at home against Kilworth Springs on Wednesday evening in the second round of the County Mixed Foursomes, having had a bye in the first round. The weather was calm and dry, the course was in great condition and excellent golf was played by both teams, with one team down and one team up most of the way round.
As match 2 stood on the 18th tee with darkness descending, the overall match score was all square. The atmosphere was tense but both women hit superb drives and both men found the green although Rich was closer to the pin. So over to the women - Kilworth narrowly missed the longer putt for birdie but up stepped Joanne with nerves of steel and cooly sank a 9ft putt for birdie avoiding the play off and taking the match for Longcliffe! Phew! It was an absolute pleasure to watch, especially with such an exciting finish (for the spectators at least!!)
Congratulations to the team and very well played! Onwards and upwards!
