The ‘Andy Rome’, as most refer to our team Fourball (best two stableford point competition) is always well supported, this year 31 teams entered in hope rather than expectation. Open to all categories, it is generally known as a friendly, fun competition format, which our past M&H Secretary Andy Rome would very much approve.

Andy was our longest serving M&H Secretary (1962 to 1984). Always a smile and cheery disposition. He served under 21 different Captains, a superb administrator with an encyclopedic knowledge and he prided himself with a great memory for all members names that he came in contact with. Aged 80, in 1984 he handed the reins over to Leslie Donaldson.

Several of the groups had the foresight to plan ahead with a start time after 1pm, taking in the Australia v Lions (2nd Test) in the Kelvin suite. Buoyed by a Lions last minute win they took to the fairways.

Unfortunately not the Sunny and high temperatures that we have experienced over the last couple of weeks. Overcast but an ambient temperature which passed ‘the shorts test’ for some. For most a dry round but the tail enders caught a heavy ‘Summer shower’ over their finishing holes.

A great day had by all. For the large majority of the field the ‘Summer Festival’ beckoned after their round. Mihai and his staff surpassed themselves producing a fabulous quality BBQ spread.
Some sat for caricature artist ‘Edd’ who sympathetically captured their better features.
David Ballingall & Glen Frew ran a chipping competition, hitting to a ‘Scottish Paradise Island’ (three blow up Palm trees and a paddling pool). Thanks to those that participated, it raised £835 for the Captain’s Charity.

The Disco in the Kelvin Suite finished the day and most of the competitors off too.

All good fun, a great day had by all. I’m sure Andy would have an approving smile.
