Saturday saw the final of the Clem Baker (Senior Handicap) Championship take place between Peter Fraser and Graham Ruddick, one of three finals for Peter. The match was tight throughout and went down the last hole all square. Peter took three putts from the far side of the green leaving Graham two putts to take the victory. Well done to Graham Ruddick.
The championship matches were closely followed by a lot of the members, and it was great to see the support. The Men’s Club Championship match was between last year’s County Champion Kieran Waters and last year’s club champion Charlie Cullen. The first 13 holes was a close affair with both players going back and forth with blows, Charlie struggled for the final few holes and ended 4 down before lunch. Charlie’s best efforts in the second round was not quite enough to bring the match back as they shook hands on the 14th hole. Congratulations to Kieran on his third club championship title, well on the way to catching his father’s record!
In the Ladies Club Championship, Nicola Waters and Rebecca Wildey went head-to-head. Nicola built up a 4-up lead after the first round but would quickly lose her lead as they went down the 27th hole all square. Nicola was able to find her ‘A’ game again and close out the match on the 16th hole. Congratulations to Nicola on another club championship win and hard luck to Rebecca on a closely thought battle!
The Senior Club Championship (AA&AE Brown) saw John Willis take on Greg Waters. The match was exciting with neither player running away with it. Greg managed to seal the deal with a gimme par on the last hole to win 1 up. Congratulations to Greg on another championship at the club!
We were fortunate to witness a remarkable piece of history this season as three members of the Waters family won Carlisle Golf Club’s premier titles. Kieran winning the Men’s, Nicola winning the Ladies and Greg with the Seniors. This was Nicola’s first win as a Water, joking in her winners’ speech that she would now be ‘’accepted into the family.’’
The Intermediate Championship and the Malcolm Jopson Championship matches were both a spectacle for Matchplay at its finest. Chris Wildgoose and Donald Bell were both 3 up with 3 holes to play and both matches ended up going to the 19th hole. Congratulations to Stewart Reay who won 4 holes in a row to overturn his match to win the Intermediate and to Dan Reed who did the same in the Malcolm Jopson!
The Morison Championship was a closely fought battle with Fillipo Amato closing the match off on the last against Lee Dawson. The Peace Trophy was won by Les Graham holing a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th to beat Trevor Thompson 2&1.
The Summer Quaich foursome’s championship was convincingly won by Roger Wallace and John Wright who were up against Ben Hetherington and Roger Smith. The Donald Bainbridge was the last match of the day played between Peter Fraser and John Edge against Ben Davidson and Tom Davis. This was a close match with both teams battling the elements at the end of the day. Ben Davidson and Tom Davis were able to get over the line sneaking in front of their opponents.
The Juniors had their two finals on Sunday as well. Congratulations to the Junior Captain Owen Ridley on winning the scratch against Will Scott 8&7. However, Will was able to come back from his morning defeat and win the Handicap Championship 6&5 over Oscar Gilligan.
The Ladies saw multiple two-time winners on the day. Heather Fraser was able to win the Ladies Foursomes with her partner Lesley Robertson on top of winning the Mixed Knockout with her husband Peter. The Lady Captain Joan Britland also took home two prizes, winning the Davison Trophy against Lesley Robertson as well as the Senior Ladies Greensomes in the afternoon with Denise Dixon against Fiona Nixon and Jennifer Graves. Congratulations to Joan and Heather.
Doreen Turnbull had a convincing win over Lesley Wilkinson in the Intermediate Trophy winning 7&6. Doreen was holing putts from all over the greens! Mandy McGrath was able to win the 19th hole in her match against Fiona Nixon to take home the Peace Trophy.
Congratulations to all the winners on the day as well as the runner ups on Finals Day. If anyone would like any of the pictures taken from the Prize Presentation, please get in touch with the shop and we will send them across to you.
