After the extensive drought conditions experienced over the summer, the showers through September have made a positive impact. I’m very surprised and pleased with how most of the fairways and unirrigated areas have responded to the recent rain.
There’s lots of recovery taking place and along with some seeding and nutrition inputs we aim to get as much of the playing surfaces recovering and repairing before winter sets in. To aid this, applications of wetting agents and molasses will be made to help with the rehydration of the soil and boost the natural recovery process.
We’re approaching the time of the year where our focus turns from solely playability and presentation towards a more preservative mindset. To Maximize recovery while we still have soil temperature and then minimize turf loss through the winter by stress and traffic management.
Throughout the season the team has managed surfaces though some very difficult conditions. Continuing to develop the course infrastructure with the addition of the paths as well as maintaining the course to a high standard. Carrying out agronomy tasks effectively and efficiently throughout the season, giving us the opportunity to continue to improve both playability and turf/soil health.
Over the next few months, we’ll be looking at hardening off the turf for winter, overseeding greens, tees, approaches and some fairways to improve grass quality, wear tolerance and overall playability. Aeration in various forms to reduce compaction, improve percolation, develop the root system of existing turf to cope better with the stresses of both play and climatic changes.
Noticeable changes to the course over the next few weeks will be and slight increase in mowing heights and a reduced mowing frequency. We’ll be looking at roping areas off for protection and recovery and doing our best to clear and collect the falling leaves. As we move further into autumn and winter, we’ll be continuing with our tree management plan which will include the felling of some trees and lifting the lower limbs of others. The tree work is vital to improving air flow and reducing shade to certain areas, helping us to develop the course further.
Thank you for your support over the summer and hopefully we get a kind and productive off season to continue moving Oxley Park forward.
Many thanks,
Rob Lawley
