It’s been a very busy week as we have made the most of the dry weather to keep on top of early season mowing.
Conditions are still really dry, and cold at night, so whilst we are seeing grass growth, it is still relatively slow, so we continue to leave the grasses on our fairways a little higher so that they cope better with the dry weather.
Our greens are now being cut at 4mm, every alternate day. During warmer days we have watered them to help spur on the fertilisers we have applied.
The STRI have advised that we should undertake some verti-draining on our greens this month, (with 10 inch x .5 inch tines), to break into some compaction caused by the very wet winter conditions. The disruption to play will be minimal.
We are pleased with the way the new turf we laid earlier this Spring around our greens has taken well.
Unfortunately the experiment of trying to use some of the old turf from the excavation of the new practice area to repair areas around the 17 tee has not worked. We will attend to these in time.
We have moved more soil from the practice area up to the new teeing ground on the 5th hole where it will be very useful.
In line with many local clubs, growth on our tees is still taking time to come through, this is why we are being very cautious as to their over use on certain holes, particularly our 4th and 7th holes.
We have to advise that the addition of general play cards, to the usual competition offerings on Tuesdays, occasional Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, has without doubt placed more pressure on our course, as it must comply with WHS course conditions for cards to qualify.
Next week we will open the yellow tees up for general play cards. This as well as the additional tee sets.
In a new development this year, we are also permitting gents to put in general play cards from our White tees on a selective basis.
The wear and tear on the tees will be reviewed weekly, and tees open for general play cards published in the pro-shop each week.
Finally, the only amendment to the local rules this week is that preferred lies are no longer in force, and you must play the ball as it lies on the fairway, and closely mown areas on the approaches and around the green.
Have a great weekend!
The Greens Team.
