The evening started brightly as George Sampson got off to a fast start going 3 up after 6 holes. He was followed by Malcom Pennycott who was all square at the same stage.
As the players started to pass the two relatively blind holes 5 & 6, a few lost balls off the tee at 6 proved costly, while John Fraser and James Kempster held steady at 2-up.
As we headed over to the back 9 Ethan was up against it and lost his match heavily on a course he hadn’t played before. This was soon cancelled out by George’s win 5&4 making it 1-1.
James Kempster was 1 up after 12 in a very tight match. With John still 2 up we relied on a comeback from the tail players - Richard Johnston, Alan Ker and Greg Nicolson all down in their matches by 2 holes.
Despite James Kempster showing great composure to win his match on the 18th and John Fraser securing a 3rd point the elusive fourth point remained out of reach. Malcom Pennycott's match went to the hosts, and the back order struggled to master the tricky Murrayfield greens.
So a 5-3 loss away from home at a tough away venue.
We now have 3 “big” home games in a league that looks like everyone is capable of taking points off each other.
Final Score: Murrayfield 5 – Royal Burgess 3
Next match – Longniddry GC (Home) – Tuesday the 12th of May
