BGC Men's TSU Team News - 6 May 2026
Hi everyone

Welcome to the new season of the team news! There’s a lot to celebrate as we kick things off, and I want to start by expressing a huge thank you to Peter Caswell, whose generosity has once again extended to sponsoring not just the Wednesday night team, but every team representing Billingham Golf Club this season. Your continued support, Peter, truly makes a difference for all of us.

Our first game of the season was at home against Hunley Hall Golf Club, and what a start it was! In the scratch section, Billingham came out strong, winning 11 points to 1. Congratulations to our winning players: Josh Thompson (3&2), Tom Lee (3&2), Phil Chadwick (6&5), Graeme Nimmo (6&4), and Jake Crowle (2&1), who made their debut and is the son of ex-player and assistant Professional Darren Crowle. Andy Hood secured our half point.

The handicap section mirrored that success, as we won by 11 points to 1. Hats off to Marc Symington (5&3), Steve Smart (2&1), Paul McGrath (4&3), Daniel Spence (6&5), and Will Bellerby (5&4). Nic Winstanley clinched a half point by winning the 18th hole. Well done to everyone who played - the final result was Billingham 22, Hunley Hall 2.

We also want to acknowledge those team players who weren’t involved on Wednesday night but still showed up to support their fellow players: thank you, Darren Hurst, Graeme Speight, Mark Odath, Chris Hall, and Craig Ewen. Your encouragement means a lot.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our supporters as well. The team truly appreciates everyone who comes out to cheer us on, starting with Captain Albert Spence, Vice-Captain Bob Kirton, and President Stew Openshaw, who stepped in to handle the team food orders! Thanks also to Col Steer, Dave McNeill, Terry Buckley, Terry Conlon, Steve Carter, Jack Hurst, Kirsty Smart from the greens staff, Neale Waldock and dog, as well as Chris Dunwell and dog, who joined us for the first time and left impressed. We hope to see you regularly, Chris! A special mention to Steve Lowth for caddying and keeping Will Bellerby on track, and last but not least, our resident OAP Robert Scotson Smith - great to see you out and about, Robert, as co-pilot for Stew. If anyone was missed, it certainly wasn’t intentional.

We want to thank John Dales and the greens staff for their hard work under tough growing conditions this season. If you’ve seen the email sent out, it explains everything you need to know.

Finally, a big shout-out to our excellent staff. Beth, our facilities manager, provided fantastic food that was enjoyed by both teams, and Archie, Kasey, and Katy delivered excellent service throughout the night - thanks for keeping us all well fed and watered!

Looking ahead, next week, Wednesday 13th May, we are away at Middlesbrough Municipal. We hope to see plenty of supporters coming along to cheer on the team; it’s bound to be more exciting than watching the soaps on TV!

Regards,
Team Managers
