BGC Men's Team News - 24 June 2026
Hi everyone Welcome to Team News Week 8. On Wednesday night, we made the trip over to Hunley Hall GC. The sun was shining, the views out to sea were fantastic, and it was a lovely evening to be out supporting the team. Unfortunately, that was about as kind as the evening got. To say the course was difficult would be an understatement. The rough, even just one metre off the fairway, was absolutely brutal, and if you went five metres offline, it often meant going three off the tee. It says a lot when even our opponents were having a good moan about it. Some of the pin positions on the greens were incredibly challenging too; I think somebody must have upset the greenkeeper! Despite all of that, every one of our players showed real grit, determination and team spirit in very difficult conditions, which were far more familiar to their opponents, who play there every week. We start with our scratch section, who gave their all regardless of the results. We gained two points from Graeme Nimmo and Marc Symington, who were both unlucky not to win but had to settle for one point each. Our losing players on the night were Jacob Crowle, 1 down; Sam Griffiths, 5&4; Josh Thompson, 4&3; and Tom Lee, 4&3. The final score in the scratch section was Billingham 2 points, Hunley Hall 10 points. Moving over to our handicap section, our winning player was Will Bellerby, with a great 5&4 victory. Our losing players were Darren Hurst, 1 down; Paul McGrath, 2&1; Steve Smart, 3&2; Graeme Speight, 3&2; and Daniel Spence, 4&3. Once again, we want to congratulate all of the players for their effort and commitment throughout the evening. You are a credit to Billingham GC. The final score on the evening was Billingham 4 points, Hunley Hall 20 points. A heartfelt thank you goes to our caddies, who turned up to help and support the players: Mark Odath, Martin Griffiths and Mr Reliable himself, whatever would Will do without Steven Lowth? It was also good to see Will in proper socks this week! We would also like to say a big thank you to our supporters who travelled to watch. Firstly, our Captain, Albert Spence BEM, who, as always, stayed right to the end to support every player as they finished. Thanks also to Craig Ewen and Terry Conlon. Your support really does make a difference and is hugely appreciated by the players and everyone involved with the team. Next week, we are back at home to Middlesbrough Golf Central (Muni) on Wednesday 1st July, so let’s see as many supporters as possible coming along to cheer on the lads. Come along and enjoy an evening of great golf, it is almost certainly better than watching England on the TV, and your partner might even thank us for giving them a bit of peace and quiet. Thanks again to every team player for your efforts. Hunley Hall is never the easiest course to play, it is certainly a real home-player course, but you all deserve credit for staying positive, battling hard and supporting your fellow team players until the very end. You are a great set of lads, and we are proud to be associated with you. Regards Tony Evans & Neil Kerr Team Managers
