Weston Bowl and East Suffolk Junior League
Impressive wins by Gorleston Ladies and Juniors
Gorleston had their last match of the season away at Flempton on Sunday with both teams requiring a win to secure the Division 3 championship. With everyone arriving in good time the team seemed relaxed and awaited the 1.30 start. First up was Team captain Marie Norman who bearing in mind her last shot on this course was a hole in one on the 9th last year proceeded to hit her first shot of the day into the ditch up the right never to be seen again so not a good start to proceedings. Fortunately, things improved for the team and with it being a nine-hole course I was able to strategically place myself in such a position that covered the 3rd, 6th and 9th greens with the clubhouse bar also with in range in case of emergency. After 9 holes the team were up in 3 matches, down in 1 and Gail was having a right old ding dong battle with her opponent being all square at the halfway stage. Things were looking good but as we all know a lot could happen in the holes that remained. The first match went to the 17th but unfortunately was lost by Gorleston, match 2 finished on the 15th with Jules securing a 4-& 3-win, match 3 was also tight with Gail 2 down with 3 to play eventually losing 3&2 to put us 2-1 down with 2 results to come. Within minutes it was 2-2 as Leigh was victorious over Flempton Lady Captain 5&3 which left Pauline out on the course 3 up with 3 to play. Pressure? What pressure, Cool as cucumber left in the freezer overnight Pauline halved the 16th with her opponent to secure a 3&2 win for herself and a 3-2 win for Gorleston which means they finish top of the league and champions. Thanks go out to all that played and/or made themselves available to play this year especially those that were reserves in case of last-minute call offs. For those who caddied and supported the ladies and thanks to Penny Platten who without fail has sent the ladies good luck messages before every match. Well done ladies, I’ve enjoyed this adventure with you all. East Suffolk Junior League With Rookery hosting Hambro and Tolly semi finals the match was switched to Gorleston and Rookery sent a team down with their highest handicapper playing off 14.5. This may have played into our hands as all but one of Gorleston’s team were receiving shots on their own track. Gorleston played well and were victorious on the day which has left them sitting top of this newly formed league after Halesworth were surprisingly beaten at Bungay yesterday. With Gorleston away at Rookery and Halesworth hosting Bungay next Sunday any one of 3 teams can win the league with Gorleston and Halesworth both on 6 points and Bungay on 5 points all is to play for however with Gorleston’s “goal difference” significantly superior to Halesworth’s a win would secure the league championship. Well done to all our Juniors who played yesterday and I’ll see those available and chosen for the team at Rookery next Sunday, Trevor has informed me that we will also have a 1.30 start time at theirs.
