The Roger Petherbridge Memorial Salver
Gorleston Seniors retain the “Roger Petherbridge Memorial Salver” for a 6th year!!!
Gorleston seniors played in the second leg of this annual match against the seniors of Great Yarmouth & Caister on Tuesday 17th August. Weather conditions were superb, overcast, a small breeze and not too hot! The greens at GY & Caister were in fantastic order, and given the drought the fairways were not much different to the “links experience” you expect there. This is a long running “grudge” match between the two rival local clubs and whilst played on friendly terms has an “edge” to it, with “Hambro” (“Myhill”) style scoring. The GGC team had the task of securing the win, having won by 17 holes at GGC on Friday. Caister fielded a strong team, but with an uphill task, given the deficit form Friday! On the day they won by 4 holes overall, leaving GGC comfortable winners for the 6th year running! Since its inception the balance is now in GGC’s favour at 19 matches v 15 over the last 30+ years All agreed it was great to play the 2 legs close together, so we hope to do that again next year! We all look forward to renewing rivalries again in 2027, but in the meantime have them to play in the 1st round of the Hodds Salver at Caister in October, when the winners will have the prize of progressing to play at Hunstanton! No doubt Caister will be seeking revenge then. Colin Denny Seniors Fixtures Secretary
